Tea Ceremony and Tea Bowl Pottery Class

Tea Ceremony with Miles BothwellKiyoshi Koons at Match Stoneware

Tea Bowl Pottery Class with Sandy Beckerman at Bitter Root Pottery Hayden Tract

A very special, two part event, that will introduce participants to the centuries old connection between tea and ceramics.

Chado, the "Way of Tea," fundamentally is just a way of mindfully sharing space with others over a bowl of tea. It is a seven-hundred-year-old tradition rooted in four principles: peace, respect, purity, and tranquility.

Miles Bothwell and Koons will conduct Chaire Kazari (茶入れ飾り), the third procedure of the kazarimono series at Match Stoneware.  Each procedure in this series was designed to highlight a particular utensil, perhaps because the item has an especially distinguished history or is an object of renown, or, because it was a gift from a highly respected individual recognized by the guests. This procedure highlights the tea caddy (chaire), which is used for a special, formal style of matcha known as koicha (thick tea). To celebrate the new year, we have chosen this formal style not typically used in tea demonstrations.

Seated on Japanese cushions you will share an intimate space with each other over a bowl of exceptional matcha and delicious Japanese sweets. The first four guests of this procedure (and any further guests interested) will receive koicha.

All non-koicha consumers will enjoy the classic foamy usucha.

Then Miles will discuss tea ceremony and the evolution of tea preparation styles within it, and you will partake in a pottery class to craft your very own tea bowl.

Afterward, you will get to sit at the potter wheels and Sandy Beckerman will guide you in a wheel-throwing class to craft your very own tea bowl.

Lastly, you will get to keep the Match Stoneware tea bowl from the ceremony. Match Stoneware is also offering a 20% discount to use in their showroom that day only .
